So I was reclining about the other day (something that I really don't do nearly as often as I used to...) and was watching the telly (kills the imagination, I know, but anyhow...) and I saw a preview for Oliver Stone's new film, World Trade Center.
What the Fuck.
Perhaps there are people that see movies in America that hadn't heard. You know, these people didn't watch TV, go online, turn on their radios or have any form of human interaction from the days of September 11th, 2001 to February 2002. They didn't know what happened. I guess it is possible that such people exist.
Although I doubt it.
The thing that has me infuriated here is that what happened was a tragedy. And Oliver Stone, Nicholas Cage and others have it in their heads that it is a grand old idea to make a quick buck off of this.
Pardon me for being obtuse, but it's a story that we all know and understand. We all saw the people throwing themselves out of burning buildings, of the massive walls of pictures of family members that everyone knew were dead but they were going to look for anyways. And the shot of the plane coming in to hit the building that we saw over and over and over, so much that it is permanently burned into our consciousness.
It's not even as if this event had happened long enough ago that we wouldn't remember it. This is the kind of thing you recall. So why is there a fucking movie?
I highly recommend that nobody see this movie. There is no point to such an abomination, and by paying to see this worthless pile of hippo feces is only feeding into the machine. What Hollywood has done here is take a tragedy that is pretty firmly implanted in our memories and try to convince us to pay to see people act it out again.
Personally, the only film that I am going to see this month is Snakes On A Plane. I may gain something greater from that film than World Trade Center.
